We wanted to draw your attention to an article in the January issue of East Side Monthly, on S.W. Dinge, a Providence artist in regular rotation at all of OneWay Gallery's locations, and whose work we have featured here on the blog.

The following is an excerpt from "Itches that Need Scratching" by Renee Doucette.

It is no secret that Providence is full of artists. While there are some visual artists who have become household names, many others remain under the radar, never seeming to get the recognition that should be due. One such artist, who goes by the pseudonym S.W. Dinge, originally hails from the Adirondacks in upstate New York. He relocated to Providence ten years ago and has been a resident on the East Side for the past four, during which time he has experienced quiet success.

As a young man out of college, Dinge moved to Boulder, Colorado with friends. Before arriving at his destination, he made a monumental decision that he was not going to play around: he wanted to be an artist and he was going to devote his life to making that happen. In Boulder, he spent his formative years as an artist immersed in his studio, experimenting and creating art while keeping his nose in a revolving stack of art books. He never expected overnight success; he made his own rules and found different ways to exhibit his work. After three years, Dinge started to see all of his hard work and devotion pay off. It was around this time he decided to move back east. Providence may not have always been the obvious choice, but it fulfilled all the requirements Dinge was looking for – and for the first time, he was not living in the mountains.

Soon after Dinge arrived in Providence, he met the crew at AS220, the art space downtown, and even though he decided against moving into their live/work loft space, he was able to start showing his work in their gallery spaces. He also started showing at the West Side restaurant, Julians. The second time he decided to hang some work there, he received an important phone call. Christian Harder, co-director of OneWay Gallery had been at brunch when he first saw Dinge’s work displayed in the restaurant and invited him to join the gallery’s roster. At the time, Harder and Stephen Cook were just starting to pull together some artists for their new gallery space in Narragansett.

OneWay Providence is currently featuring a hand cut linoleum print by RI artist Ana Marinelli. Marinelli studied printmaking and OneWay has long been a proponent of her work. Her print work lends itself to playfulness, which is especially depicted in this piece. The handmade technique is well executed, a representation of Marinelli's training and education. Framed, the piece measures 16.5" x 26".

Fish McGill

Fish McGill is a Boston-based artist whose work might be familiar to anyone who knows of Harmonix, the game development company responsible for Rock Band, because his illustrations often grace their website. Fish's work is fun and full of vibrant character work. The piece below, available at OneWay Providence is a small, framed painting created with watercolor, ink and gouache and is only $75.

Molly Bosley's work is influenced by images from times gone by, with her utilizing archived images and drawings to create both intricate paper cuts and mixed media artwork. The viewer is left with an inkling of nostalgia, both because her pieces look as if they were created to evoke this emotion and because the work put in by the artist is almost tangible. This tangible quality comes from the intricacies in Molly's work as well as her want to imprint the hands-on process of creating each piece. "A Thousand Pieces Gone By" and "The Burden of Responsibility" both exhibit these qualities and are available at OneWay Providence. Molly will have new work available in our upcoming exhibition, Love & Sex & Hate & Heartbreak.

More about the artist:
Molly's wanderings through the aisles of thrift stores and her diggings into yard-sale bins provide her with the raw materials from which she constructs depictions of memories that never happened. Her own memories span far more than the stretch of New England from her hometown in Massachusetts to her alma mater in Vermont, where she studied fine art and language. Molly's need to create is sustained by her hunger to learn and to experience both familiar histories and new adventures—desires which have bounced her around Europe and the Americas so far; and will undoubtedly lead her further.

These four pieces are great examples of how OneWay Gallery aims to carry a wide range of price points as well as mediums. These prints were created by RI resident Diana Brennan, an artist who has taken her love of photography and her knowledge of environmental science to create beautiful artwork that blends science and nature. These pieces are archival inkjet prints on plywerk and are available at OneWay Providence. Small prints are available at $150 each and larger prints are $250 each.

Untitled :: Stephen Cook

We are carrying this large scale work by artist Stephen Cook at OneWay in Providence. This piece exhibits more of the direction Cook has been taking, building large canvases and creating skillfully executed abstract pieces on them. The color palette for this piece grabs the attention of the viewer, with its rich orange and yellow hues and biting, cool turquoise tones. It is difficult to capture the texture of this interesting piece, but the canvas has been splashed with resin on some spots, creating glossy textures throughout.

Harris Hawk :: Christian Harder

This archival pigment print captures a Harris Hawk in motion in the Catskills in NY. Photographer Christian Harder has created a beautiful black and white image exhibiting a blurred subject, giving the work movement, as the hawk spreads its large wings. From across a room, the bold dark tones mixed with the greys makes this piece mistakable for a detailed painting. The print is approx. 46.5" x 65", framed and from an edition of 5.

Twisted Piggie, a BBQ sauce brand created by chef Joel Henry of East Greenwich, RI will be released this Saturday at OneWay Gallery in Providence. The sauces are homegrown; Joel has tried to source everything locally and even sourced RI artist EVOKER to create his logo. Originating in July 2011, the sauces were created for a friend's bachelor party. The response from the party's attendees and Joel's friends and family was overwhelmingly positive, so he followed their advice and bottled all three flavors. The tasting will be held this Saturday from 6-9pm in Providence, where you can sample these delicious sauces yourself. After that, check out your local farmers' market in the Spring and Summer seasons to find them.

Knuckle Duster Rings :: Islay Taylor

OneWay Providence is very excited to be carrying knuckle duster rings by Rhode Island artist and contemporary jewelry maker, Islay Taylor. These knuckle duster rings are gold plated bronze with bezel set, hand painted acrylic nails. According to Taylor, were inspired by the Kid Sister song, "Pro Nailz". Taylor strives to find inspiration in the every day, mundane object, which she has successfully done in these pieces by creating an unexpected appeal in using acrylic nails in an alternative form of wearability.

About the artist:
Islay Taylor was born in Wakefield, Rhode Island. She is a contemporary art jeweler, who uses the body as a pedestal to showcase wearable sculptures. She received her MFA in Jewelry and Metalsmithing from the Rhode Island School of Design. Currently, she works as the Gallery Director at Hera Gallery, teaches Continuing Education at RISD, and maintains an active studio practice.

About the artist:

Jen Gandee graduated with an M.F.A. in material studies from Syracuse University's School of Art and Design. She currently works as a professor of ceramic arts. She gathers her inspiration primarily from historical artwork and folk art traditions. These influences are then used to draw on the past while making it relevant to the present. Drawn to historical, symbolically-rich objects, her work is a mix of contemporary art and historical craft work.

We currently have two recycled steel sculptures available at the Providence gallery by artist Justin McGill. McGill's work certainly draws attention from people passing by the gallery's windows, especially the hulking figure "Broken Worker" measuring in at 5'7" and featuring huge feet and elongated arms. His sculptures command your attention and then hold it with their detail and ability to evoke intrigue. Both pieces are centered around the human form, but play with the balance and weight of these forms.

Nick McKnight was born in Louisiana, but raised in Rhode Island. After moving from Rhode Island to Baltimore, MD, Nick finally moved back to finish his BFA in painting/printmaking at the University of Rhode Island. He has exhibited throughout New England including Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachusetts and has been included in juried exhibitions such as the All Media Open Juried I at the South County Art Association and at the 2nd Annual Juried All Media Exhibition at the Grimshaw-Gudewicz Art Gallery in Fall River, MA. Awards include the David Ketner award for studio excellence and 2nd Place at the All Media Open Juried I.

"Dreamer" :: Amanda Albanese

We recently spoke to artist Amanda Albanese about her piece "Dreamer". She dissects the imagery within this oil painting, the intentions behind its meanings and the use of photographic imagery in her artwork.

"Dreamer came into being as part of a series ‘Artifacts of the Imaginary’ which was a collection of paintings based on the meeting of found imagery, fragmented thoughts, and interpretive dream states. It was an attempt to create a pictorial reality, which simultaneously conveyed a sense of ambiguity and lucidity in being lost and found in one's own personal history and present state.

The child was used as an archetype of sorts, as one who indiscriminately interacts with objects as part of a developmental schema-- and the objects which are designed to manipulate that experience in order to gain capital from it. By acting on a motivational set whose agenda lies hidden not in the objects itself, but in the system which promulgates it, the object becomes torn between the thing by which one learns from and the system which constitutes it. For the individual, the dichotomy takes form when one realizes that as a product of this conflict, memory and reality are inevitably affected by it--whereby all experience from which ones instincts are derived--become suspect as an agent against oneself.

This painting attempts to recollect the threat on impeding outside entities into ones personal space, ones sometimes guised as objects of beauty, and feelings of home.

The use of photographs has become a point of departure for its ability to exist in itself as an object and pictorial as we perceive it. The photograph becomes both a historical artifact as well as a post production recording of memory. The tonal qualities of the paint are sometime nostalgic--indicative of a vague suspension encountered when trying to use the past as a means to guide the future."

"Act I" :: Stephen Cook

"Act I", a new piece from artist Stephen Cook, looks as interesting as the answer was when we asked what sort of mixed media went into creating this intriguing piece. "It is a mixture of several different types of paints, india ink, ink reels from old fax machines and fiber glass from boat wreckage," says Cook.

FIFA 12 Tournament to Benefit Haiti

All proceeds from the tournament will be used to fund a professional development program for community-based coaches in Jacmel and Port au Prince, Haiti and the 1Haiti youth soccer tournament. Melissa Mastrangelo’s work should hit those from Providence close to home. This self-taught artist and former veterinary technician relocated from Florida back to her home state of RI to capture the industrial landscapes of Providence. According to Mastrangelo, “The piece, ‘Over the Tracks’ is a depiction of the tops of the graffiti-tagged industrial mills found in the Harris Avenue section of Olneyville and the ‘Providence Steel and Iron’ piece, with it's rusty steel gantries and cranes, are from the steel yard on Sims Ave."

She goes on to say, “In both of these instances I looked up and knew immediately that I had to paint these structures. As with most of my subjects, they tend to pick me rather than the reverse. My process usually begins with walks through Providence, once a structure or landscape grabs me, I often begin with an on-site sketch and photograph. If the location is suitable I often paint a small study of the subject and use a photograph as reference in my studio for the final rendering. I am repeatedly drawn to and inspired by the grittier urban setting rather than the more typical glossy city scenes. Aside from my love and interest in rusty, decayed structures, that at one time were highly functional and useful to our well-being, I am also drawn to the cities abandoned locations because they tend to be inhabited by underground subcultures. Whether it's the graffiti writers, grass-roots organizations, or aspiring artists and musicians, there is a creative energy in these areas that feeds off itself. It excites me to challenge the viewers perception of what is worthy of putting down on canvas. The quiet structures that appear in my paintings often evoke a feeling of familiarity which draws the viewer in and forces them to take a second look at an otherwise over-looked or ignored structure. Most of my works are created using graphite, acrylic paint, spray paint, and occasionally ink.”

Studio Dunn featured in dwell magazine

We're proud to have one of our artists featured in dwell magazine's October issue. Studio Dunn, based in Providence, is a small furniture company that creates original, hand worked hardwood designs. Their Kingstown Barstools, made from sustainably harvested hardwood, were featured in the magazine in an article showcasing home furnishings made in the USA. OneWay Providence currently carries the small size of these barstools (approx 17.5" tall) as well as other pieces by Studio Dunn.

Josie, a graduate of RISD, often utilizes the juxtaposition of wild animals and the domestication of human society in her paintings. This piece comes from Ron Hutt, associate professor in URI's Art Department, where he teaches courses in Digital Art and Design and is a founding member of the university's "3D Group for Interactive Visualization", a partnership between the Art and Computer Science & Statistics departments.

"AoES_03" is from Hutt's Digimorphism project and this particular piece is from the group of artwork entitled, "Animus of Earth & Sky" (AoES). According to Hutt, these paintings "are the result of a new studio practice of moving from physical paint applied with custom brushes, then to digital forms for compositional transformation, and then back again to physical paint." This piece will be part of a group of work that OneWay will be bringing to NYC to be exhibited, so if you are in the Providence area, make sure to stop in at OneWay to see this painting on display before it heads to The Big Apple.

"Upstate" - S.W. Dinge

Born in New York but now residing in Providence, S.W. Dinge has been a long-time exhibitor with One Way Gallery. We currently have a few of his pieces in both locations, including this large-scale painting "Upstate" in Providence. The artist draws from a wide-range of influences and this piece reflects what he describes as his recent attraction to "the immediate gratification of simple, more abstract works."

We spoke to Dinge about the painting and here is what he had to say, "My attempt was to express the cold isolation one might feel while walking alone in a blizzard... I grew up in the northern section of NY state and used to love (and still do) walking in the massive snow storms and how quiet and peaceful it felt to me."

Dinge has succeeded in drawing his audience into the tranquil and encompassing feeling of a snowstorm with the texture, colors and size of "Upstate." NARRAGANSETT–Tired of seeing trash on RI’s beautiful beaches? Local surfboard shaper Kevin Cunningham is doing something about it, and you can help. Kevin, Founder/Owner of Spirare Surfboards, has teamed up with Kickstarter, an organization dedicated to helping artists carry out their visions, to bring you Spirare Sustainable Surf Craft a.k.a. the Trash Board.

Cunningham’s plan is to gather trash from local beaches and re-use these materials in the already green, recycled, surfboards that he creates everyday.

“I like to view my surfboards as functional art,” said Cunningham during a recent interview. The trash he collects will be used in the same vein. Some pieces such as plastic bottles will be cut up, broken down and made into beautiful fins, which he is known for. Plastic bags can be, “woven into a strengthening cloth,” which will increase the boards overall durability. Other items salvaged will be used to cover the canvas of Kevin’s Sustainable Surf Craft with inlays and patterns to please the eye.

From now through April 16 Cunninghan is gathering pledges online to reach his goal of $3,200 that he needs to complete the project. Once he has reached this mark he will begin utilizing trash that he and his girlfriend have been consistently picking up while surfing and walking along local beaches. The boards will be completed by summertime and ready to be displayed in art galleries around the country. After those pieces are done Cunningham will produce a limited run of 100 hand shaped, signed, and numbered reclaimed trash surfboards for custom orders. His boards have already been featured at the One Way Gallery in Narragansett as well as many other galleries and surf shops around New England.

“The atmosphere in which my surfboards are viewed changes the way they are seen,” he said.

People who pledge will get more than just a warm fuzzy feeling and a good night’s rest. Depending on the amount you pledge, gifts range from; Spirare Surfboard T-shirts and tote bags to, body surfing hand planes crafted out of paulownia and found driftwood, to a percentage off a custom surfboard!

Cunningham, a native of Baltimore, MD grew up surfing the beach breaks of Ocean City during his families’ summer trips, but it wasn’t until 2003 while studying architecture at the Rhode Island School of Design that he took to surfing full time.

“I couldn’t afford surfboards, but I could afford the materials used to make them,” he said. Since he began shaping, Kevin has made his own pledge to use green design, and sustainable materials to make boards that perform well, look good, and have a low environmental impact.
Traditional surfboard blanks are highly toxic, only 3 to 4 percent recyclable, and create large amounts of liquid and solid waste. The blanks that Cunningham uses are made from recycled EPS or, extruded polystyrene foam, which is derived from Styrofoam coffee cups and food containers.

Some of Cunningham’s boards are simply EPS foam with a wooden stringer. A stringer is a small strip of wood that traditionally runs down the center of a surfboard. They help the board retain its flex and remember which position to return to as foam itself has no memory and alone will remain flexed if not pulled back by the wood. Many Spirare surfboards contain multiple stringers with beautiful curves and arcs inlayed for artistic and structural purposes.

Kevin also makes boards with a stronger core, and an even stronger pledge to the environment. His wood and honeycomb boards are on the cutting edge of what it means to be green when it comes to surfboard shaping.

The wood boards start with the same recycled EPS foam core but are finished by covering the board in a poplar wood skin, and parabolic wood perimeter made from paulownia to add strength and flex to the board which will help it project out of turns and also increase its life ten fold with no reduction in performance over time. Aside from all the functional purposes that a wood skin provides, the boards are so astounding to look at that even a non-surfer can appreciate their beauty and fine detail.

Kevin’s Honeycomb boards are what truly defines his pledge to the earth and highlight his shaping creativity. There is no foam whatsoever in these boards. In his shop, Kevin pieces together thin strips of bamboo veneer to make a lightweight and super durable honeycomb core.

Cunningham installs the core into a balsa wood frame, which he then shapes and finishes with a poplar wood skin and paulownia rails. The result is the strongest, greenest board on the market today.
These are not just “feel good” boards. Spirare Surfboards are legit. They perform so well that popular professional surf sponsor Nike 6.0 has commissioned Kevin to build boards for their team surfers including Coco Ho, and Carissa Moore, both of whom are rising stars with world title contention in their grasp. His honeycomb design won him the 2008 RI State Fellowship in Design and the 2010 RI State Council on the Arts Professional Artist Development Grant. Recently even the likes of surfing legend Tom Carroll have placed custom orders for Kevin’s boards.
Most surfers make a pledge to help keep our beaches and waters cleaner. Some even join organizations such as Surf Rider and participate in beach clean-ups. Kevin Cunningham has taken this pledge a step further and made it his livelihood, creating greener boards for cleaner waters.

NARRAGANSETT–This past Saturday as a full moon rose to glow an astounding orange over Narragansett Bay, the One Way Gallery re-opened its doors to the public for the spring, and for good. Over the winter, Curator Stephen Cook and Gallery Director Christian Harder, labored intensively to winterize the One Way, which until now was only open seasonally. They added a white, dry wall ceiling, a better heating system and of course a slew of original, inspiring works from right here in Narragansett and around the country.

“These folks really covered their bases and threw a great party,” said local art collector Abbe Lassow. The One Way is a great place to hang out, view and buy art, or simply relax. Add to that; hors d’oeuvres, wine, beer, music from DJ Sterbyrock and DJ Primitive all for free and you have a recipe for an exciting evening in Narragansett.

A diverse crowd flowed through the gallery as the night carried on.
“We’re happy to be working with such young, talented, and fresh artists," said co-owner Stephen Cook. "We like to provide the public with reasonably priced contemporary art.”

One Way is truly on the cutting edge with over 50 artists from across the US, many of whom are local, using all types of mediums from painting, and photography, to a more modern mixed media and even enamel on steel. Their website is easy to use, up to date, and loaded with info about the artists that display in their 1,500 sq ft. gallery. Large or small, the One Way has it all, and with pieces ranging from $20 to $1,600 there really is something for everyone.

The gallery also features a unique small works and gift shop that sells beautiful local hand made jewelry from Amber Bettez and Diane Rothbart, hats from Enemy (a local surf company), and limited edition clothing. There are tons of small gift items in the shop too; trinkets and toys that are functional and fun as well as paper goods such as greeting cards, artsy notebooks, pencils and pens.

“The One Way offers a place to find funky art work with out having to look for it,” said local artist and writer Jody Eyre. Eyre rents one of the nine studios located within the gallery which she had available for viewing during the opening. Inside hangs many of her somewhat abstract beach scenes and other landscapes that ooze Rhode Island all over the canvas, along with other sketches and paintings. Jody’s space was cozy and warm, breathing a country vibe into this urban building by the beach.

Cook is happy with the new space.

“We added the ceiling and painted it white so that everything really popped inside,” he said. The clean, high ceiling along with exposed beam construction and track lighting really give the gallery a warm, inviting, and spacious feel, while certain corners and walls remain red brick adding a gritty, city feel. The gallery attracts art hungry tourists from Boston, New York, LA and London so you better get in there soon before all these wonderful pieces are bought up and a whole new crop is brought in.

Her work with the portrayal of animals that seem to be at their most vulnerable state make the work impossible to walk away from. Her text based work is always something to see as well.
